The Importance of Soap
September 19, 2025

Hygiene is a crucial issue

Today I want to talk about soap . . . yes, soap . . . something we all take for granted. But what would life be like if we didn’t have any soap? Let me tell you what I saw while visiting some Cambodian villages. To put it bluntly I saw lots of sick kids with runny noses – and other runny places also.

(I’ll leave that image to your imagination.) Sick kids stay home. They don’t go to school. Increasingly they fall farther behind in their lessons, resulting in further increases in drop-out rates. Here’s what one of our NGO Partners, the Ponheary Ly Foundation (PLF), has to say about soap:

The importance of soap cannot be overstated, particularly in rural Cambodia, where families may not have regular access to hygiene supplies. Additionally, lessons in good hygiene practices for children may be inconsistent. Therefore, the availability of soap at school and often, soap at home, is crucial for promoting health and hygiene in these communities.

Our program not only provides soap but also includes workshops for students from kindergarten through sixth grade, teaching them about the importance of hygiene, the nature of germs, and how diseases are transmitted. This knowledge is passed from students to parents and grandparents at home.

Students also use soap to clean their feet and legs after traversing rice fields on their way to school and being exposed to fertilizer and pesticides along the way.

Now, here’s the final word from Lori, the Executive Director at our trusted NGO Partner, the Ponheary Ly Foundation.

This makes a huge difference in the lives of so many kids.
We are so very grateful for your help in keeping us supplied with soap this year!

I hope you’re getting the message here.
What you’re hearing above is a BIG thank you to YOU —
the generous donors that make our work possible.
Actually, it’s more than 1000 young Cambodian voices all saying

Thank You

We’re really proud to partner with Lori and the entire Ponheary Ly team, working together to improve education and life opportunities for so many marginalized kids living in remote Cambodian villages.
