A few days ago, I wrote about the new toilet block we provided for a village school in Cambodia. That was certainly good news for the kids and teachers there. It would be an understatement to say they were excited. Without a doubt, we’re proud of what we accomplished. Now, I want to get even more basic.
Can you imagine not having a toilet in your own home?
Unimaginable, right? But, for 48% percent of the people in the Cambodian village of Tapour that was the case. For them, open defecation was simply a reality. Check out this one-minute video for a vivid look at the conditions those people faced.
Partnering with Rotary, one of the world’s largest service organizations, we were able to pull together funding of nearly $140,000 to provide Washroom Toilets for Tapour. Today, thanks to our wonderful partners Build Your Future Today (BFT) and the Cambodia Clean Water & Toilet Project (CCWTP), working together, over 260 Tapour families now have a sanitary, non-polluting toilet. In addition to meeting their basic needs, this also provides a safe, dignified place for women to attend to their own hygienic needs, and to those of their children.
Here’s another short video to show you what these families now have available. From “the bush” to this new facility is a life-changing difference for them. Already, we’re receiving reports of dramatically improved health. To put it bluntly, with less diarrhea, the kids are able to attend more days of school.
Providing toilets at home
Promotes education
The pathway out of poverty
Now . . . back to my headline of “Only 23 More to Go”. Twenty-three more toilets will finish the job and provide every single family in the entire Tapour village with a proper toilet. Many will be brand new like the video above. Others will be retrofitted to proper sanitary, non-polluting standards. Especially noteworthy, all this work will be done with carefully-trained Tapour villagers, thereby enhancing the local economy.
Here’s the result when we achieve
100% for this village
• Village is clean
• Aquifer is protected
• Health benefits are huge
• Kids get more days in school
That’s where you come in.
$500 provides one beautiful new toilet
just like the one you see in the video above.
$350 provides the necessary retrofitting to an existing,
non-functional toilet to bring it up to standard.
